In the heart of Newcastle, overlooking the iconic bridges that span the River Tyne, an extraordinary event unfolded at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The Eliminate Hate ’24 event, hosted by Northumbria Police, brought together voices from across the spectrum of our beautifully diverse community. Among these voices was Julie, a neurodivergent public speaker and activist, whose story is not just one of overcoming but of transcending.
Julie, despite being hard of hearing, stood on the stage with a poise and determination that captivated the audience. Her involvement was not only a testament to her personal resilience but also to the support of organisations like Ngage NE Ltd and New Beginnings NE Ltd. These organisations have been instrumental in supporting Julie to not just live independently but to achieve her dreams and aspirations, from advocacy and public speaking to green screen filming and content creation.
Living in supported accommodation with her best friend and flatmate Vickie, Julie’s journey is one of relentless pursuit of her passions, representing the neurodiverse community with every fibre of her being. At the Eliminate Hate ’24 event, she spoke confidently on the subject of hate crime, sharing her thoughts and feelings with a depth of insight that moved everyone present. Julie’s speech was not just her own story; it was the collective voice of many who have faced adversity because of their differences.
Julie’s activism and public speaking go beyond just events. Through her love of green screen filming and online content creation, she continuously advocates for the neurodiverse community, bringing to the forefront the challenges and triumphs of neurodivergent individuals. Her work serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in diversity and the importance of representation.
